CAA Announces “Roads to Realism” and “GoFigure!”

The Cooperstown Art Association proudly announces two new group exhibits;  “Roads to Realism,” and “Go Figure!”  Both shows will open Friday, March 30th with a reception from 5-7pm and will be on display through April 25th.

“Roads to Realism” will feature oil paintings by Charles Hartley, oil paintings and drawings by Sugwon Kang, photographs by Lawrence Mirarchi and mixed media pieces by Carol Saggese.

Charles Hartley has no formal training in art, but has been fortunate enough to have visited a number of the great art museums of the world and seen examples of the finest paintings.  He and his wife have traveled extensively in the past twenty-five years, mostly to somewhat less developed countries with exotic sights and people, and have documented their adventures with photographs. He paints mostly from his travel photographs, picking the subject matter when it offers something he thinks he will enjoy painting.

As a child, growing up in Korea, Sugwon Kang drew pictures before he learned to write. Before he was a teenager Kang was drawing people’s faces, to the delight of his parents and elders. He never went to an art school, nor did he study with an established artist. Kang’s participation in a weeklong workshop with portrait painter Daniel Greene in the summer of 2001 proved an important source of encouragement. “There’s much to be said for taking up painting as an avocation”, he says. “You don’t have to prove anything; you just do it for the fun of it!”

Lawrence Mirarchi grew up in Brooklyn, became enamored of upstate New York, and settled in Oneonta.  In addition to teaching chemistry at Hartwick College, he has pursued a life-long interest in photography. He has been especially fascinated with the local landscape, where he finds personal meanings and metaphors in its endless variety and transformations.

Carol Saggese is a native of this area, residing in Oneonta, New York. Her works are done in watercolor, mixed media, ink in the style of Chinese Brush Painting and graphite. She uses these mediums to achieve unique textures and impressions. Carol is a self taught artist and has attended workshops conducted by Don Getz, Marian Simpson, and Tom Natoli. She most recently studied with Gerald Brommer in the hill towns of Tuscany, Italy.

“Go Figure” features sketches by the CAA Monday Night Drawing Group which is a casual group of artists that meet every week to sketch without an instructor.  Bill Schaeffer states, “It’s possible that we’re the longest running “class” in the history of the Art Association.  At this point I’m the only one that traces back to the beginning.  I’m not good with dates, but it was easily over 15 years ago.  At one point, we had 3 generations of my family drawing together (my mother, daughter, and myself).” “Go Figure” will feature work by Morgan Ackerly, Beladee Griffiths, Christine Heller, Linda Kosmer, Ron Lytel, Christopher O’Meara, Bill Schaeffer, Lilian Voorhees and Vicki Whicker.

The CAA is located at 22 Main Street in Cooperstown in the Village Library building, diagonally across the street from the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Hours: 11 - 4 pm daily, 1 – 4 pm Sundays, closed Tuesdays.  Please call (607) 547-9777 for more information or visit www.cooperstownart.com

Calling all Artists!!!  Upcoming Juried Shows!

Attention Artists! Our 21st Annual Regional Art Show, “Essential Art,” is being juried by Leila Durkin and Susan Benedict Hand.

Leila Durkin began pursuing photography in her 30's. She had studied painting, sculpture & photography but it was kismet that gave her the final push into photography. Through grants from The NY State Council on the Arts, she created 3 photographic installations depicting the local community, architecture & character. She recently collaborated on the book, The Garden Wall at Beekman Farm. She holds an AA of Liberal Arts & a Bachelor's of Visual Arts. She is the publisher & editor of The Chatter, a local Sharon Springs newspaper. Leila & her husband, Philip, purchased the old Village Hall & Library building (ca. 1850) in Sharon Springs, and the Village Hall Gallery opened its doors in 2008 supporting “Contemporary Art in a (rural) Historical Setting.”

Susan Benedict Hand is a graduate of both Cazenovia College & Syracuse University Lowe School of Art, graduating in 1964 with a B.A. in Illustration and Design. She has illustrated several books including The Essence Book of Days by Daanan Parry & The Earth Stewards Handbook by Daanan Parry. Susan taught Special Education Art at Canajoharie Central School focusing on weaving, mural painting, mask building, & nature drawing. She also taught figure drawing & studio drawing & gave workshops in Papier Mache, large head and body size mask building at Canajoharie Library & Art Gallery. Since 1985, she has successfully run an illustration & greeting card business, Susan Hand Illustrations. She has recently been involved in one on-one teaching drawing, painting & mono-printing with artists of all ages in her home studio. Susan states, "My Abstract Expressionist paintings are currently inspired by my love of nature and the dance of shifting light."

The Regional Show is open to artists 18 years of age and older who reside in New York State and now offers $2000 in prizes. The works of art themselves will be juried; no slides will be accepted for this show. The delivery dates are Friday and Saturday, April 27 & 28, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. The show runs May 4 through June 1 with an opening reception on Friday, May 4 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

Summer would not be the same at the CAA without the National Juried Exhibition! This year will mark our 77th!  This year’s juror is Tony Reinemann.  Tony Reinemann has been creating snapshots of New York City and the world all around him through his unique talents as a fine arts painter and digital arts professional for more than 30 years. By combining elements of both art forms, Reinemann is able to create vivid portraits of New York City and all of its eccentricities. Reinemann sees Manhattan as a place where everything is exaggerated and magnified – the beautiful and the opulent; the unseemly and unrefined. His work captures the essence of New York City – especially at night. “When the sun goes down and darkness takes over, there is no other place as mysterious and theatrical as Manhattan – it’s simply the perfect allegorical backdrop,” Reinemann says. Over the years, Reinemann’s works have been exhibited at the Museum of the National Academy of

Design in New York and the Whitney Museum of Art as well as other notable galleries in the United States.

His paintings are represented in private collections throughout the United States and internationally.

Reinemann began his art studies at Sage College in his hometown of Albany, New York. Later, he earned

his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he received the Rhodes Family Award for

Excellence in Arts, one of the school’s top honors. In addition to his career in fine arts, Reinemann has worked for many years in the field of illustration and digital imagery in the advertising industry. His creativity can be seen in prominent advertising campaigns for some of the world’s leading consumer product companies.

“When you boil it all down,” says Reinemann, “my work is really autobiographical and spiritual, and the

images I create portray my own world of observation and contemplation. New York City offers an ideal

backdrop for someone like me who enjoys the color, the darkness, the shadows, the architecture and

most of all – the people – we find in such incredible abundance in Manhattan.”

The National Exhibition accepts original work in all fine art mediums; no commercial reproductions or crafts will be accepted. To enter this show, artists must send slides/CDs of their work. The slide/CD deadline is May 15.  Possible $3500 in prizes will be awarded. The show runs July 13 – August 17 with a Preview Party on Friday, July 13 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m with awards being presented at 6pm.

We would appreciate your help in spreading the word. Please share this with every artist you know!
