National Show on display through August 17th

at the Cooperstown Art Association

The Cooperstown Art Association’s 2012 National exhibition which represents 21 states has been touted as “one of the best”, “of exceptional quality” and “delightful” by locals and visitors alike.  The National Show is a must-see and we encourage everyone to come visit and view this exceptional exhibition before it closes on August 17th.  From Michael Bignell’s striking New York City streetscape, “5th Avenue” to Chris Kroup’s moveable sculpture , “Granddaddy’s Tired Legs” the works are distinct and remarkable. This inspiring show is overflowing with diversity and talent and every entry deserves to be seen.

The Cooperstown Art Association’s 77th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition kicked off with a very successful Preview Party on Friday, July 13th where this year’s award winners were announced. Twenty-one awards were given, with the Grand Prize awarded to Mark Larsen of Norwich, New York for his two photographs, “Flooded Field, Oxford, NY” and “House and Valley, Plymouth, NY.”   Traditional photographic tools and techniques are important to his work and consistent with his subject matter which are nostalgic glimpses and remnants of a simpler past.  Our second largest prize was awarded to Wilfred Loring of Lindsborg, Kansas for his oil painting, “May Clothesline II.”  Loring’s subjects come from wherever he happens to be and he looks for strong light sources, dynamic compositions and movement of the subject.

The Cooperstown Art Association is located in the Village Library Building, 22 Main Street, diagonally across from the Baseball Hall of Fame. Admission is free and open to the public. For more information please call (607) 547-9777. Gallery hours: Daily 11-4p.m. and Sunday 1-4p.m.  Visit our website at www.cooperstownart.com and like us on Facebook!

Both Michael Bignell of Earleville, MD and Bonnie Murray of St. Louis, MO (left & center) received juror citations in the Cooperstown Art Association’s 77th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition which is on display through August 17th in all three galleries located at 22 Main Street, Cooperstown.

Summer Art Classes for Adults at the CAA

Painting the Head with Doug Jamieson

Thursday mornings
8-weeks, July 19 – September 13 *class will not be held August 23rd
10am – 12noon
$110 for Members / $115 for Non-members

Explore the unique characteristics of oil painting by using water soluble oils without the messy cleanup and toxic smells of turpentine. Students will learn a procedural approach to the medium including color mixing, glazing, wet on wet, the use of underpainting and direct and indirect painting. In each session the instructor will give demonstrations and offer hands on help. The class will be working from photos. Fee includes materials.

Doug Jamieson is a professional etcher and painter. His etchings are surreal and explore darkness, dreams and whimsy. His subject matter is a mix of the archaic and the modern. His paintings are naturalistic landscapes and interiors, his interest lying not in the grand vista but rather in exploring beauty in the common place, the familiar, the intimate view, and the moment captured. He now lives in the Western Catskills which provide an endless range of shifting colors, light and moods. He is the author of DRAW FROM YOUR HEAD: A STEP BY STEP SYSTEM OF DRAWING THE HUMAN FIGURE, published by Watson Guptil. He has a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and is currently involved in numerous arts organizations and exhibitions. His vast experience includes painting, printmaking, drawing, oil, watercolor, & etching in styles that are figurative, landscape, surrealistic, conceptual & realistic.

Plein Air Landscape Class with Ashley Norwood Cooper

Mondays and Wednesdays, July 23 – Aug 29

9am – 12noon with rain dates on Fridays

$120 for Members / $125 for Non-members

This class will focus on the working landscape—vegetable gardens and small farms. Observational painting is a great way to slow down and look harder and we will be using this opportunity to observe more about our local landscape, the food it produces, and the story it tells.  Students will meet at various locations to paint together.  Please come prepared to work outdoors, to carry your supplies to a good painting site and to tolerate a little heat, a little dirt, and a few bugs. You may work in any medium you are familiar with or would like to explore. I will be using oil sticks and oil paints. Oil sticks (made by Schminke and R and F) are made of oil paint and can mix with oil paints. They are nice for landscape painting because of their portability. If you use acrylics then I recommend Golden Open Acrylics for their slow drying time. Pastels and watercolor are fine, too.  If you are accustomed to painting in the open air and you know what you like to use, bring it.   You should wear a hat and sunscreen, bring a bottle of water and bring comfortable shoes for walking outdoors where it might be muddy.

Ashley Norwood Cooper is a working artist who has shown at galleries in NYC and around the country. She holds an MFA in painting from Indiana University. She has taught painting and drawing at Indiana University and at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. Ashley is a member of First Street Gallery in NYC and a recipient of the MARK Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts.  You may view Ashley’s work and her full resume at ashleynorwoodcooper.com.  If you have questions about the class please e-mail her at ashley@ashleynorwoodcooper.com.
