Community Wide Opening Reception at the CAA Galleries

You're invited! Come to the Cooperstown Art Association for our biggest community-wide opening reception of the year. We will be celebrating the start of three exciting shows: ESSENTIAL ART; the 22nd Annual Regional Juried Art Show, “At the Water's Edge"; paintings by Sandra Dovberg and the Cooperstown Central School Art Exhibit.  The public reception will be on Friday, May 3rd from 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m. with music by Norman Dovberg, wine and tasty treats made by community members.

ESSENTIAL ART is a juried art show celebrating the talents of artists residing in New York State. The jurors this year are Kristen Henderson, Director of the Cherry Branch Gallery and Alice Brewton Hurwitz of Cherry Valley, NY.  These two talented judges will select artwork to create a show that is truly outstanding!  ESSENTIAL ART will be on display through May 31st in Gallery A.

“At the Water's Edge", a solo exhibition of paintings by Sandra Dovberg, presents abstracted aquatic environments in a variety of mediums. Dovberg's unique style combines elements of abstraction with representational subjects to convey a sense of renewal and relaxation. In this show, babbling brooks and crashing waves come to life through the mediums of oil, watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, collage and found objects. With these paintings, Dovberg aims to create an even better reality than the reality that the eye sees. This show will be on display through May 31st in Gallery B.

Lastly, the tradition of the Cooperstown Central School Art Exhibit continues with an exciting outpouring of talent for 2013. The students' enthusiasm and creativity is not to be missed at this annual show that will fill the upstairs ballroom gallery with color through May 29th.

As always, admission to the Cooperstown Art Association is free! The CAA galleries are located at the 22 Main Street Building on the corner of Main & Fair streets. Gallery Hours:  Open Daily 11-4 and Sunday 1-4, Closed Tuesdays through Memorial Day. For more information please call (607) 547-9777.  Visit us on the web at www.cooperstownart.com.

Calling all Artists!!!  Upcoming Juried Shows!

Attention Artists! The CAA announces two upcoming juried shows, the 22nd Annual Regional Art Exhibition, “Essential Art” and the 78th Annual National Art Exhibition.  Both prospectuses can be downloaded from our website at: www.cooperstownart.com.  To request a prospectus by mail please send a self addressed stamped envelope to National and/or Regional Exhibition Cooperstown Art Association 22 Main Street Cooperstown, NY 13326.

The Regional Show is open to artists 18 years of age and older who reside in New York State and now offers $2000 in prizes. The works of art themselves will be juried; no slides will be accepted for this show. The delivery dates are Friday and Saturday, April 26 & 27, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. The show runs May 3 through May 31 with an opening reception on Friday, May 3 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.  Our 22nd Annual Regional Art Show, “Essential Art,” is being juried by Kristen Henderson and Alice Brewton Hurwitz.

Kristen Henderson began her fine art studies under Taro Yamamoto, a descendant of the Hans Hoffman School of painting, in Eastham, MA. Henderson went on to pursue art more formally at Sarah Lawrence College where she studied painting with Ursula Schneider & sculpture with Nancy Bowen. In 2000, Henderson

participated in NYC's largest outdoor public art exhibit, CowParade, in which fiberglass cows adorn the city. Henderson's cow, "sMOOch," sponsored by Estée Lauder, stood adjacent to the Plaza Hotel in Grand Army Plaza. In 2010, she became Director the Cherry Branch Gallery in Cherry Valley, NY where she hosts monthly exhibits & poetry readings. Currently, Henderson is working on a documentary film about a little known jazz pioneer.

Alice Brewton Hurwitz retired in 2006 from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Film & Television Department & moved to Cherry Valley, NY in 2010 where she's loving the beauty of the area & the rich variety of local artists. Educated at the University of Florida, the University of NC, the University of Southern MS & NYU, she pursued a career teaching art in NC, MS & AK before moving to NYC to experience the art world first hand.

While studying for her Ph.D. at NYU, she directed an art gallery in the East Village. Later, influenced by film students, Alice recognized that documentary film was an appealing story-telling medium & began researching an old family story that became the basis of LILLIE & LEANDER: A LEGACY OF VIOLENCE which

premiered at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival. Presently, Alice is back to painting and enjoying the stimulation and camaraderie of artists at the Cherry Branch Gallery.

Summer would not be the same at the CAA without the National Juried Exhibition! This year will mark our 78th!  The National Exhibition accepts original work in all fine art mediums; no commercial reproductions or crafts will be accepted. To enter this show, artists must send slides/CDs of their work. The slide/CD deadline is May 15.  Possible $3500 in prizes will be awarded. The show runs July 12 – August 16 with a Preview Party on Friday, July 12 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m with awards being presented at 6pm.

This year’s juror is John Magnan.  John Magnan is a second-career artist living and working in the Waterfront Historic District of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He creates unique wood sculptures, mixed-media corporate and private installations, solo exhibitions, and performances. A lifelong woodworker, he began his artistic career in 1995 and earned his MFA in sculpture from UMass, Dartmouth. Previously, Mr. Magnan completed a 28-year career with the National Security Agency in Maryland, where he assumed a wide range of executive and program management responsibilities. In addition to his MFA, Mr. Magnan holds an MS in National Security Strategy from The National War College, Washington, DC and a BS in Mathematics from Niagara University. His artwork has twice been featured on CBS News Sunday Morning. Magnan’s latest solo exhibition, Strangers in Class: Gazing Across the Economic Divide, recently premiered in Alabama and Massachusetts. His previous exhibit, body image | body essence, traveled the country for 9 years to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, and is now on permanent exhibit at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. “My principal medium is wood, and most people think of me as a wood carver,” says Magnan, “but I am a sculptor, often branching out into or mixing in other media. I choose the medium that best fits the content of the art, but I’m most often drawn to wood because it’s a warm and primal material with incredible versatility, used for everything from construction to jewelry. I love pushing it to its limit, creating the unexpected and seemingly impossible.” Magnan’s art is located at the boundary of craft and so-called fine art, a marriage of craftsmanship and content. He strives to create work that is interesting and beautiful to look at while drawing people in for a closer look, offering them something more, something deeper, should they choose to invest the time to explore. “It’s their choice,” says Magnan, “and I’m happy either way.

We would appreciate your help in spreading the word. Please share this with every artist you know!
