Handbuilding: Lidded Boxes and Jars

Description: All levels welcome-

This class will focus on creating lidded vessels using slab-building techniques. We will learn and practice skills for building with leather hard clay slabs—making and attaching pieces to create and then modify rectangular or cylindrical vessels. Other handbuilding techniques will be covered as needed. Those with previous experience might try to make a set or explore surface decoration.

Want to learn a new throwing skill or sharpen the skills you already have? If so, sign up for a two-hour, one on one lesson with Eileen. After contacting the studio you will contact Eileen directly to schedule a mutually agreed upon time (including evenings and weekends).

8-Week Open Studio Feb. 6 - Mar. 31

*Our Open Studio Sessions are open to anyone and everyone, but knowledge and skill of hand building and wheel throwing is required as Open Studio is a place for experienced clay artists to work on personal projects. There will be no instruction provided during Open Studio.


*If no open studio participants have arrived within 1.5 hours of a session, the studio will close.


*Classes and Open Studio are ages 18 and up, unless otherwise indicated.

  • Payment can be made on the first day of class by check, cash, or credit card.

*We ask that everyone work together to keep our studio healthy and safe. With that said, we strongly advise anyone who is experiencing any covid or flu-like symptoms to not attend class or open studio until it is safe to do so. Please err on the side of caution, and feel free to email the studio with any questions you may have about attending class or open studio.


*Mask wearing will be optional for everyone working in the studio during Open Studio Hours

This Saturday, March 4th, come to the Christ Church Parish Hall (69 Fair Street) from 12-2pm for the EMPTY BOWLS luncheon! Your $20 donation helps support our friends at the Cooperstown Food Pantry and includes one of the unique bowls made and donated by our own Smithy Clay Studio Artists! The Clay Studio is very proud to be part of this event.

The 32nd Annual Fenimore Quilt Club Show at the CAA
The Fenimore Quilt Club Show is one of the largest and longest running quilt shows in the region, displaying approximately 100 quilts and quilted items of all types each year. From antique to modern, professional to novice, all areas of quilt-making are represented in this show, encouraging quilters and quilt collectors alike to bring their wares and family heirlooms to show off.

The Cooperstown Winter Carnival is all about traditions, both old and new. This weekend make sure to stop by and see one of Cooperstown longest running Winter-Time traditions at the Cooperstown Art Association. Escape the cold and discover what our galleries have to offer.
Bet on Your Chance to Win Big
Don't forget to purchase your tickets for this year's raffle quilt "Birds of a Feather Quilt Together". Tickets can be purchased each day leading up to the end of the show on Feb. 19. Tickets can be purchased at a rate of $1 per ticket or $5 for 6 tickets. All proceeds go towards benefiting the Fenimore Quilt Club and local organizations.
