CAA Announces “Two Generations of Gouache” and “Into the Light”

An opening reception on Friday, April 5th from 5-7pm will celebrate “Two Generations of Gouache” by Daniel J. Harrington and Daniel K. Tennant in Gallery A and acrylic paintings by Mimi George, "Into the Light" in Gallery B.  Both exhibits will be on display through April 24, 2013.

Daniel J. Harrington of Guilford, NY and Daniel K. Tennant of New Woodstock, NY will be exhibiting "Two Generations of Gouache".  Daniel J. Harrington was the grand prize winner in our 2011 Regional Juried Art Show "Essential Art" and long time student of his co-exhibitor and mentor, Daniel K. Tennant.  Harrington states, "I have had a love for drawing for as long as I can remember. Growing up I became very interested in art but I had no real direction or guidance. The moment when everything clicked for me was at my Grandmother's funeral. I was thirteen and that was when I saw my first Daniel K. Tennant painting."  Harrington began studying with Daniel K. Tennant and Mr. Tennant later introduced him to gouache (opaque watercolor). This medium was a perfect fit for Harrington - it is opaque, it dries quickly and it enables him to make crisp details or soft washes. Daniel Harrington has been painting with gouache as his sole medium for 19 years. Daniel K. Tennant is one of the very few fine artists in the country who uses gouache as their only medium.  His work is done on a larger scale and has been exhibited extensively across the U.S. and is represented by M.A. Doran Gallery in Tulsa, OK.  Both Harrington & Tennant are masters of texture compelling the viewer to reach out and touch their work!  With both of these artists you will find yourself looking a bit closer and might even find yourself trying to dust off the eerily realistic mason jars or instruments in their crisp paintings.

Mimi George of Jamesville, NY considers herself a representational artist with an impressionistic focus.  "Light and the way I perceive it are vital to my work.  My landscapes tend to be intuitive, textural and atmospheric, inviting the viewer to interpret the moment.  My abstract works sometimes seem to be directing me rather than the opposite, with emphasis on pattern, color and texture," states Mimi.  She tries to achieve a luminous play of light across the surface of all her paintings, creating a sense of place and time, taking viewers "Into the Light".

The CAA is located at 22 Main Street in Cooperstown in the Village Building on the corner of Main and Fair Streets.  Gallery Hours: 11 - 4 pm daily, 1 – 4 pm Sundays, closed Tuesdays.  Please call (607) 547-9777 for more information or visit www.cooperstownart.com

CAA Announces Winners of “An Artistic Discovery”

Art is alive and well in Otsego County and even more so in our high schools!  “An Artistic Discovery”, the Congressional Art Show for Otsego County High School students on display at the Cooperstown Art Association galleries is chock full of talent featuring over 100 works of art in all media and we are proud to announce the 6 Award Winners and 7 Juror Citations which were awarded on March 8th and are still on display through March 29th in Gallery A.  This year’s jurors were Richard Duncan of Milford, Tracy Helgeson of Fly Creek and Susan Kenyon of Cooperstown.  All judging was done anonymously with no knowledge of the students’ name or school.  “An Artistic Discovery” is an annual Congressional art competition for high school students sponsored by Congressman Chris Gibson and administered locally for Otsego County High School students by the Cooperstown Art Association.  The main objective of the competition is the encouragement of ongoing creativity in young artists, especially during the times when budget constraints may interfere with the availability of local arts-in-education programming.

Digital images of the work by the six award winners will be submitted to Congressman Gibson’s office where it will then be considered along with entries from the other counties within the 19th Congressional District which include Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Ulster and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties.  From there one student will go on to have their artwork displayed for a year in the corridor leading to the US Capitol along with 49 other high school artists’ work from across the country.

The Otsego County winners are Claire Dohner of Cooperstown Central School for her “Untitled” pencil drawing, Lauren Loucks of Cherry Valley - Springfield School for her photograph titled “Hay Bales on the Hilltop”, Sophie Miller of Cooperstown Central School for her ballpoint pen drawing of “Edgar”, Kristina Paffenroth of ONC BOCES for her photograph titled “Forgotten”, Alexander Reyes of Worcester Central School for his abstract acrylic titled, “Nightmare” and Abby Wilcox of Cooperstown Central School for her oil painting of an “Octopus Cupcake”.

Juror Citations went to Abby Wilcox of Cooperstown Central School for “Alien Cupcake” in oil, Anthony Hewitt of ONC BOCES for his acrylic, “Reverse Space”, Claire Dohner of Cooperstown Central School for her “Untitled” pen and ink, Bertha Miller of Schenevus Central School for her “Untitled” oil painting, Matt Frevele of Cooperstown Central School for his sculpture “Rat’s Ass” and Keira Higgins of Milford Central School for her pottery “Teapot” and “Blue Apple Birdfeeder”.

The Cooperstown Art Association is happy to have hosted another outstanding exhibit full of flourishing talent and would like to thank all the schools and students who participated!  The Cooperstown Art Association is located at 22 Main Street in the Village Building on the corner of Main and Fair Streets and is open Daily 11-4; Sunday 1-4.  Closed Tuesdays.  For more information call 607-547-9777 or go to our website at www.cooperstownart.com.

                                    Quilt Show Viewer's Choice Announced!

The Fenimore Quilt Club and the Cooperstown Art Association proudly present the Cooperstown Quilt Show Viewer's Choice.  The CAA estimates that well over 1,000 quilt lovers attended this year’s show and each person was asked to vote for their favorite.

The 22nd Annual Quilt Show was a truly regional exhibit and included participants from far and wide.  Out of approximately 100 quilted pieces in the show, which included full size quilts, wall hangings, baby quilts and pillows, the Viewer’s Choice was “Waiting for the Mail” by Mary Wilber Wirchansky of Schenevus, NY.   In this unique art quilt the quilter’s grandfather is portrayed waiting for the mail with his dog in front of the house he built in eastern North Carolina.  In the sky excerpts of letters are inscribed that he wrote to his daughter in the 1930’s and early 40’s.  Stamps are also included from that era.  Congratulations Mary!

Kathy Allen of Cooperstown was the lucky winner of the 2013 Raffle Quilt made by members of the Fenimore Quilt Club depicting buildings of many shapes and sizes. The Fenimore Quilt Club and the Cooperstown Art Association would like to thank all the participants for making this year’s exhibit so successful.  For questions or more information, please call (607) 547-9777 or go to our website at www.cooperstownart.com.
