The Cooperstown Art Association and Smithy Clay Studio are seeking a Clay Studio Manager & Lead Instructor for the Smithy Clay Studio *More Information Below* If you, or anyone you know, are interested in this position please contact The Cooperstown Art Association at gallery@cooperstownart.com or (607) 547-9777 Clay Studio Manager & Lead Instructor - Full Time The Smithy Clay Studio is seeking a studio manager and lead instructor. Candidate must have a BFA in ceramics or equivalent experience, MFA degree is preferred. Candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills, show initiative, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Teaching experience and knowledge of wheel throwing and hand building techniques is required. Responsibilities include but are not limited to programming development, clay and glaze preparation, kiln firing and maintenance, and maintaining a safe studio environment. A successful candidate will be compensated with a fixed base salary. This position does not include healthcare or retirement benefits, but does include flexible schedule, generous vacation time, small private office and studio space, free firing and access to dry materials, and sale opportunities at both The Smithy Gallery and Cooperstown Art Association. Winter Clay Classes & Open Studio Sessions February 6 - March 31, 2023 Introduction to Wheel Throwing with Kris Gildenblatt 4 weeks | Held Twice A Week | Feb 7 - Mar 2 $280 w/ bag of clay Tuesday & Thursday 10am - 1pm *No Experience Required* Description: All levels welcome-  This (4 Week) 8 session introductory class is for beginners with little or no throwing experience. We will systematically work through the basics of using the potter's wheel to make cylinders and cups. In addition we will learn about making handles and finishing our mugs with texture and glaze. Come give it a whirl! *INSTRUCTOR REQUIRES FACE MASKS BE WORN BY ALL PARTICIPANTS. SPECIFIC TO THIS CLASS. *4-Person Minimum *8-Person Capacity Introduction to Handbuilding with Ann Geiger 4 weeks | Feb 7 - Feb 28 | $150 w/ bag of clay Tuesdays 1:30 - 4:30pm *No Experience Required* Description: All levels welcome-  Ann will teach handbuilding techniques beginning with the basic building block of clay slabs. Inexperienced students will focus on the building techniques. More experienced students may take the techniques and work on more complex designs. Come and try! *4-Person Minimum *8-Person Capacity Centering the Potter and the Clay with Karla Andela 8 weeks | Feb 8 - Mar 29 $280 w/ bag of clay Wednesdays 6pm - 9pm *No Experience Required* Description: All levels welcome-  Learn the basics of wheel throwing in this fun and relaxing evening class. I’ll lead some stretching and breathing to shift from our busy day into this space of creativity! With careful attention to body alignment to increase safety, we will practice making multiple forms on the wheel. Throwing, trimming, glazing, and some handbuilding techniques are all included in this 8-week class. *4-Person Capacity *8-Person Capacity Handbuilding: Lidded Boxes and Jars with Megan Irving 4 weeks | Mar 8 - Mar 29 $150 w/ bag of clay Wednesdays 10am - 1pm *No Experience Required* Description: All levels welcome- This class will focus on creating lidded vessels using slab-building techniques. We will learn and practice skills for building with leather hard clay slabs—making and attaching pieces to create and then modify rectangular or cylindrical vessels. Other handbuilding techniques will be covered as needed. Those with previous experience might try to make a set or explore surface decoration. *4-Person Minimum *8-Person Capacity Looking For Something A Little Different? Sign up for One on One Sessions One on One with Eileen Anania 4 weeks | Month of March $75 *clay not included* Times are Variable Contact eileenmanania@gmail.com Directly *No Experience Required* Description: All levels welcome- Want to learn a new throwing skill or sharpen the skills you already have? If so, sign up for a two-hour, one on one lesson with Eileen. After contacting the studio you will contact Eileen directly to schedule a mutually agreed upon time (including evenings and weekends). *Stay Tuned for a potential class for the month of March* 8-Week Open Studio Feb. 6 - Mar. 31 *Our Open Studio Sessions are open to anyone and everyone, but knowledge and skill of hand building and wheel throwing is required as Open Studio is a place for experienced clay artists to work on personal projects. There will be no instruction provided during Open Studio. *If no open studio participants have arrived within 1.5 hours of a session, the studio will close. *Classes and Open Studio are ages 18 and up, unless otherwise indicated. No Open Studio from 6-9pm Tonight

*CANCELLED* Due to unpredictable inclement weather we have decided to cancel tonight's Open Studio Session, Thursday January 19th from 6-9pm, in regards to the safety of our staff and participants. Although cancellations are not ideal, they are sometimes necessary. "Make-up" sessions will not be offered for any Open Studio Session cancellations. January Open Studio Sessions Open Studio Sessions will be available from now until February 3rd. Our Open Studio Sessions are open to anyone and everyone, but knowledge and skill of hand building and wheel throwing is required as Open Studio is a place for experienced clay artists to work on personal projects. There will be no instruction provided during Open Studio. When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 1:30-4:30pm and Thursday Evenings from 6:00-9:00pm (weather permitting) Where: The Smithy Clay Studio, 1 Otsego Ct.
