ABOUT THE WORKSHOP Inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing, this Western-style raku involves removing pottery from a kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies and produces brilliant metallic blues, purples, coppers, reds, and yellows. Participants will have the opportunity to fire up to 12 items (options and pricing are available when registering.
You don't have any bisque work of your own but you still want to participate? No worries, We have a few options for WALK-INS such as a pre-made vessels in varying sizes and dragonflies. See prices and vessel sizes when registering. On the day of the event participants will choose to glaze their work with one of our four specialized Raku Glazes. Our Kiln is capable of firing works up to 16" tall and 12 inches wide.
WHERE? The Smithy Clay Studio located at 1 Otsego Ct. in Cooperstown, NY. The Clay Studio is located in the yellow building down the alleyway to the right of Cooley's Stone House Tavern.
