Three New Exhibits to Open at the CAA Friday, September 30th

Art and Art and more Art is coming to the Cooperstown Art Association on Friday, September 30th from 5-7pm and will be on display through October 28th in all three galleries.  Work by members of the Blind Artists Society will be on display in Gallery A, “People You Know” by Tracy Helgeson in Gallery B and “Form, Change and Restriction” by Charles Alex in Gallery C.

The Blind Artists Society was initiated in 2007 as a free web portal with the intent of providing support and exposure to visually impaired artists.  The Society’s members include both artists with visual loss -- some as severe as legal blindness -- as well as supporting artists who have normal vision but feel connected to the cause of their fellow artists.  Since 2007, the Blind Artists Society has grown - it now has over 40 visually impaired artists from a variety of locations, ranging from the northeastern United States to its western coast and as far away as Greece and Brazil. There is much diversity among the artists, ranging from style, to preferred medium or level of visual impairment.

“People You Know” by Tracy Helgeson of Fly Creek, NY is an ongoing series of oil portraits based on photographs that Tracy finds at yard sales, antique shops, estate auctions and on ebay.  Tracy states, “I look for elements in the photographs that appeal to me; the figure, items in the background, a particular pattern or pose.  These portraits are about the photographs that I choose and my connection to them.”

“Form, Change & Restriction” by Charles Alex of Hartwick, NY is a combination of pen & ink drawings and sculptures in ceramic, wood and aluminum that resemble and convey human forms.  Charlie Alex states, “I express ideas through a style that whimsically reflects dark humor. My work is a personal response to the human element of frustration and its related sense of restriction.  Essentially, the sculptures are metaphoric representations of imposing limitations within the boundaries of life.”

The Cooperstown Art Association is located at 22 Main Street in the Village Library Building and admission is free and open to the public.  The galleries will be closed Monday, October 10th in observance of Columbus Day.  Gallery hours: daily 11-4; Sunday 1-4, Closed Tuesdays through Memorial Day.  For more information call 607-547-9777 or visit us on the web at www.cooperstownart.com
